WHAT TO UPGRADE FIRST: SOLAR PANELS OR BATTERIES?
20th Feb 2023
A common question we regularly get asked is “Should I replace my solar panels or batteries first?”. We will be discussing the many factors that come into play when deciding to update your system. First, you’ll need to weigh your options as to why you believe you need to replace either the panels or the batteries.
Solar Panels
When it comes to solar panels in terms of longevity, you should base your choice of replacement on the remaining life expectancy your panels have. Additionally, it is important to know how well your solar panels are working at their maximum performance. For instance, if you have carefully maintained your panels for years and are beginning to receive less than 80% power output at its highest potential; then it’s time to upgrade. Lastly, solar panel modules are constantly evolving and are now available in smaller footprints with equal, if not higher rated efficiencies, suitable for those who are limited in space. The main benefit of having quality solar panels is that they have a long lifespan ranging from 20 to 25 years on average, provided they are properly maintained and cared for.
Batteries
It is much more effortless to tell when it’s time to replace the batteries, because they will simply not work. An easy way to know when something is wrong is when the battery indicates fully charged after 10-15 minutes compared to its normal 8-10 hours. Another telltale sign is when the battery starts making clicking or clunking sounds, which either means that the internal plates are separating or that the battery was overcharged. Additionally, as your battery gets older, its performance will also gradually drop, which is another sign that it may be time to replace your battery. For ideal performance, it’s recommended to replace your batteries roughly every 3-4 years.
Our Recommendations
We highly suggest upgrading your batteries first. Our recommendation stems from the simple fact that the battery is the heart of any off-grid solar panel system. If your RV batteries are old, dead, or making clicking or clunking noises, then it’s time to replace them. If your batteries are performing optimally, then our advice is to perform a routine maintenance check on your entire system and look for faulty wiring or loose hardware, and then finally test the power outputs of your solar panels individually. If the panels seem to be underperforming, then it might be time to replace the solar panels next.
Ultimately, the choice is yours, but as long as you choose renewable energy, you’re already winning!
