WHAT FIRST-TIME SOLAR BUYERS SHOULD EXPECT

WHAT FIRST-TIME SOLAR BUYERS SHOULD EXPECT

26th Dec 2022

Are you interested in going solar but don’t know what to expect? No worries because throughout this blog we will outline the topics to consider when going through this process.

Why do you want to go solar?

There are many different reasons why you should go solar for off-grid adventures. For many people, it’s because they want to become self-sufficient when adventuring away from the power grid. Then some want to save money and be eco-friendly. No matter the reason for going solar, it is a cost-effective investment and a great chance to practice sustainability when you are off the grid. You begin to feel more independent because you are now dependent on yourself compared to the common dependency on conventional forms of power generation.

What solar solutions do you need?

Your solar needs and applications will dictate your choice of solar solution. For instance, if you just purchased a large-sized RV and want to use solar to power some appliances and electronics, our recommendation would be to go with a large-scale (in terms of wattage) solar solution.

Let’s now talk about if you have a small trailer or an Overlanding vehicle. A large solar kit would not be a viable option. For this, we’d recommend a smaller-size solar solution to fit properly and power the necessary tools, appliances, and equipment you require.

Generally speaking, if you are looking for something more in line for a first-time solar buyer, a solar kit is perfect because it has all the essentials you will need to begin your solar journey. Most of the time, it is all you need for most situations.

Think about your mounting needs

So now you’ve decided on which solar solution to satisfy your needs and application(s). Now you need to figure out how to mount it. Depending on the solar solution you may need to use physical mounts for rigid solar panels, or you can use a more temporary mount for our semi-flexible panels such as straps or adhesive strips. In terms of charge controllers, these can be easily mounted using the pre-drilled holes on the controllers. And the batteries can be placed anywhere you choose as long as they satisfy the safety instructions.

Final thoughts

We hope we have been able to shed some light on some of the aspects of becoming a new solar energy owner. Going solar may seem daunting, but rest assured, it’s relatively easy once you figure out the amount of power you need to supply given your application and circumstances.
