SOLAR SETUP BUILD PREP - THE STEPS
21st Sep 2023
As we move towards a more sustainable future, it is essential to equip ourselves with the right knowledge and tools. Building a solar setup is an excellent step towards living or adventuring off the grid. But, before we start with the actual installation, there are a few crucial steps that need to be followed to ensure that we do it right.
Step 1: Define Your Power Needs
The first step in building a solar setup is determining your power requirements. It's essential to have an accurate estimate of the power you will need to ensure that your setup meets those needs.
Step 2: Solar Panels & Mounts
Once you have your power needs determined, the next step is to purchase solar panels that meet those needs. You’ll need to look for panels that both meet your energy/performance needs as well as the amount of space you have to work with. Additionally, choosing the correct mounts for your panels is important. This will depend on the size of the panel and your specific application.
Step 3: Battery Storage
Battery storage is another crucial component of your solar setup. It's important to purchase high-quality batteries that can withstand deep cycling, have a long lifespan, and provide sufficient energy storage. Remember to ensure that your battery storage is correctly sized according to your energy needs.
Step 4: Charge Controllers
Charge controllers are devices that regulate the power output of your solar panels to prevent the overcharging of your batteries. You need to ensure that your charge controllers can handle the total energy output of your solar panels and charge your batteries efficiently. We recommend PWM for small to mid-size systems, and MPPT for mid-size to large systems.
Step 5: Inverters
Inverters are responsible for converting the direct current (DC) from your solar panels into usable alternating current (AC) energy. Ensure that your inverters are correctly sized based on your total wattage in order to meet your energy needs.
Step 6: Install Your Solar Setup
Now that you have all the components ready, it's time to install your solar setup.
Living off the grid is becoming increasingly popular, and building a solar setup is a great step towards achieving it. By following the steps outlined above, you’re now ready to go solar!
