SOLAR PANELS & RVS
5th Apr 2022
There are two factors to consider when deciding whether to install solar on your RV. First off, think of how often you plan on taking trips with your RV? If your limit is a handful amount of trips per year, the cost of installing a solar system on your recreational vehicle may not be worth it for you. However, if you’re a full-time RVer or find yourself spending extended time in your home on wheels, having a solar panel system would be most beneficial.
The second question to think of is the type of arrangement that you will have on your trips. Will you be parked only at campgrounds or is there a possibility of boondocking/dry camping? In this case, installing your own solar panel system will give you the freedom to go completely off-grid while still enjoying the small comforts we all know and love.
Solar panels are extremely low maintenance, however, provide a cost-effective, convenient, and eco-friendly way of living. Using the sun’s energy, a solar panel system has the ability provide you with a reliable source of clean energy while eliminating the need to run your generator as frequently.
The two common approaches to solar among most RVers are portable solar panels and smaller flexible solar panels. Portable solar panels are compact and easy to use making them a go-to option for first timers, whereas flexible solar panels can be mounted to the top of the RV for a more permanent solution to power your home on wheels.
To successfully run off solar energy in your RV or camper, aside from solar panels, you will also need a few other components to complete your setup:
1. Battery – solar energy storage
2. Inverter – convert your DC to AC electricity
3. Charge controller – prevent overcharging
4. Wires/cables and mounts – connecting and mounting your system together
