SOLAR INSTALLATION FOR RV II
12th May 2022
In our last blog, we talked about what components and accessories you’ll need before installing your DIY solar system for your RV. Today we will discuss how many solar panels you’ll need altogether and what installation steps are required to complete the setup.
Before deciding on the number of solar panels to buy, it’s important to analyze and understand how much energy you consume. First, you will need to calculate the watt-hours for each device and appliance you intend to power. Next, you’ll need to obtain the total watt-hours consumed each day by adding all the numbers together. Your next step will be to calculate the average power a solar panel will produce, which is typically based on the panel’s wattage, location, and current weather conditions. Finally, with the numbers at hand, you can determine how many solar panels you need for your RV.
- 1.Use brackets/mounts to install the solar panels on your RV’s roof (Most solar panels are designed with pre-drilled holes for an easy mounting solution).
- 2.Install a charge controller inside your RV – make sure the controller is in close proximity to your battery bank.
- 3.Install an inverter inside your RV near the battery bank (Only required if you want to charge any devices or appliances that run on AC power).
- 4.Connect the wires that run from your solar panels into your RV to the charge controller.
- 5.Connect wires from the charge controller to the battery bank.
- 6.Connect wires from the battery bank to the inverter.
- 7.Ensure that the overall Short Circuit Amperage is less than the Maximum Series Fuse Rating (If greater, each parallel connected panel will need to be fused).
- 8.Ensure that the polarity of the wiring throughout the system is installed correctly.
And that’s it! Once you’ve completed the steps above, you’ve successfully completed your solar panel system installation on your RV!
We hope our earlier blog “Solar Installation For RV I” and this one has provided you with tips for your own solar installation and has helped you in determining the right solar system for your overall needs!
