LOVE OF SOLAR – A FATHER’S LESSON

Over 50 countries worldwide celebrate Father’s Day because it’s a day to recognize and commemorate fathers and father figures for everything they’ve done for us and continue to do in our lives.

It’s no secret that fathers provide us with advice, comfort, support, and security. Either by example or by way of counsel, it’s our fathers who impart wisdom and convey life advice, ultimately helping pave the road to success for their kids.

As a kid who grew up traveling all around the US, I had the privilege of seeing my dad do what he loves most – Being outside, in nature, with his family. At the age of 18, while my younger brother was about 16, I was given the opportunity to help my dad with a project he was so excited about. We installed the very first solar panel on our motorhome that summer. From then on, every summer, dad had my younger brother and I climb up the roof of our motorhome to hose down and wipe off his precious solar panels. “Careful not to leave any streaks!!” He’d yell at us from below. I remember asking my father about the panels on our motorhome, complaining to him how I never really understood his obsession with solar panels, “Dad, why do you always make us climb up this thing just to wipe these down?!” What he said to us in that moment, changed our mindsets from that point on, as dad turned to my brother and I saying, “Boys, nothing in this planet is more powerful than our sun’s energy – so why not harness its power so we can benefit in our lives? Think of the solar panels on our home as a durable and highly effective power producing machine. A machine that provides us with electricity so we can have power and lights. It allows you boys to watch TV and play all the video games you want, while enjoying the simple benefits of air conditioning. We get to enjoy all these pleasures while traveling wherever we want. I wouldn’t trade this type of freedom for anything else, and one day when you’re older, you both will understand the benefits.”

Well, let’s just say I never quite understood the words he said to me that day and just shrugged it off like many other kids would have. Most of what I recall of my childhood was always playing outdoors, traveling wherever and whenever as a family, and my dad coming home with random solar gadgets that he found on sale (after mom’s approval, of course!).

It took years for me to finally understand my dad’s passion and advocacy for solar. Needless to say, the man knew what he was talking about all along. After growing up and experiencing life on my own, I have come to really appreciate my father’s words of wisdom. One can attest that my dad is the main reason behind my passion for solar energy and living a sustainable life full of adventure and travel. Not only has his love of solar enriched my life, but it’s become a rewarding lesson that I get to pass on to my children someday. Who knows, maybe it’ll happen while they’re wiping down the panels atop our RV…
