GREAT RV DECORATING IDEAS FOR CHRISTMAS
Are you spending your holiday vacation alongside mother nature? As a home away from home option for some, while for others, a permanent living solution, campers and RVs provide all the ease and comfort you need during cold winter nights allowing you to snuggle up with your loved ones. There are some obvious advantages to downsizing from a house to a home on wheels, but during the holidays, it can make some of us feel overwhelmed and discouraged. We start pondering - How can I decorate my RV or camper? Where would I put my Christmas tree? And so on. Fortunately, as far as creativity goes, there's plenty of room to work through some of those obstacles.
We've listed some decorating tips to help you get your RV or camper ready for Christmas.
Think about the Christmas Trees
Artificial trees are perfect for smaller spaces and can be stored for repeated use annually! You can find reasonably priced synthetic Christmas trees in various sizes that can fit in a corner without blocking your walkway or living space. Another option would be to place your Christmas tree outside your RV or on a raised patio, if applicable, where you can enjoy the festivities and lights, without compromising on the living space in your RV.
If placing your tree outdoors, we recommend placing it under your awning to boost up your holiday ambiance, while still maintaining sufficient space to place gifts under.
Another alternative we don’t typically suggest is a wall-mounted Christmas tree. The reason we don’t highly recommend this for those looking for space savings options, is strictly because it takes up a large amount of space on your wall and is not conducive to most RV owners.
However, if you’re still insistent on having a real Christmas tree, you can get a $5 tree cutting permit from the National Forest Service. Regardless of whether your tree is big or small, real or fake, store-bought or naturally cut from the woods, Christmas trees add to the wonderment of the holidays and bring a whimsical joy during this time of the year.
Find a Wreath in the Woods
Most often, we buy a wreath and store it for annual use. However, when living in an RV or camper, storing Christmas wreaths and decor might not be the most convenient or sensible when you have a limited amount of space.
The best and highly recommend option is to use natural materials around your campsite or campground. Sustainable options are a great way to save space while staying festive and keep costs low. Not to mention, it’ll even impress our dearest Mother Nature.
While hiking the trails or perusing around, collect fallen pine boughs, twigs, vines, tall grass, and palm leaves to weave or wrap into a wreath shape. Then, add pinecones, flowers, leaves, fruit, or pods as decorations and hang or tie with colorful ribbons or twine. After the holidays, you can easily remove the ribbon, cut the garland, let the material decompose in the wooded area, or even burn it in your fire pit.
This option is completely free, urges you to be creative and will add new memories to your holiday camping trips. It’s important to make sure you don’t invade or cause any damage to plants when picking materials for your wreath.
Make Your Windows Feel Like Christmas
Ornaments are some of the most essential items when decorating for Christmas. They add to the holiday cheer and festivities, so make sure not to leave your RV bare! The windows which are considered the eyes of an RV, are often illuminated and decorated during the holiday season. With the help of window clings and stickers, you can really go all out and have some fun with all the different ways to show off your holiday spirit.
If you’re looking to buy holiday window clings that fit your Christmas theme, you can buy kits that come with everything you need to decorate your space! Common themes includes snowflakes, Santa’s sleigh and reindeer and Christmas presents. Window cling kits offer a chance for you to spend more time together as a family and create some fun craft decorations.
Placing window clings on the entirety of the windows will block the camping view. Alternatively, consider framing the edges so you can enjoy the holiday scenery together without compromising your vision.
Before you start decorating, clean your windows thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and let them dry for optimal adhesion. We recommend rubbing alcohol because many window cleaners will leave a residue that causes clings to curl around the edges and then come off totally within a few days.
Add Sparkle with Lights
Now that the decorations are done, it's time to light it up. The first thing you’ll want to do before turning on the lights is to make sure you don't exceed your available wattage. Hang strings of patio lights around your campsite to create a festive feel with colored bulbs. Use magnetic light clips to mount C7 or C9 string lights on your camper. Use rope lights, candy cane markers, or Christmas strings lights with mounting stakes to mark out the perimeter of the trail or campsite.
LED bulbs use 90 percent less power than incandescent bulbs, so it’s best to opt for LED bulbs when shopping for lighting options. They also last longer, since the bulbs are made of plastic rather than glass, which is proven to be more durable over time. If you plan to go off-grid during the holiday, a 300W solar kit is the perfect addition that can power your lights and charge your devices. Another option is to skip standard electric lights altogether and power them with rechargeable batteries.
