Five Easy-to-Make Halloween costume DIYs

Here at Newpowa Inc, we take Halloween seriously — very seriously. Halloween is all about flickering lights, spooky haunted houses, and evil broom-riding witches. This year, we opted for costume ideas consisting of a green energy theme, or as we like to call it, New Power.

Here are the five easy renewable energy Halloween costume DIYs.

Solar Panel Halloween Costume

Halloween may be dark and spooky, but you can bring some positive (renewable) energy to the party as a sleek, shiny photovoltaic solar panel. All you need is some cardboard, cellophane or plastic wrap, silver markers, duct tape and string. Start off by covering the cardboard piece with cellophane, then secure the edges with duct tape, and using the silver marker, draw a grid. Lastly, attach the piece of string to the back of the cardboard wide enough to slip over your head. Viola! You’ve now turned yourself into the world’s most crucial source of clean energy. Wear your sunglasses at night for added sustainable swagger, but please, resist the urge to climb onto any rooftops.

Supplies Needed:

· Cardboard

· Dark blue or black cellophane

· Silver permanent marker

· Duct tape

· String

Wind Turbine Halloween Costume

Clean energy never goes out of style. For this majestic Halloween costume, cut out three “blades” from a piece of foam poster board and attach one to each of your arms. Cut a hole for your face in the third poster board and wear white clothes or an old sheet to complete the look. You won’t produce electricity, but at least you’ll generate conversations wherever you go, so why not impress your friends with the fact that U.S. wind energy prices reached all-time lows in 2014, or that wind could provide up to 35% of the nation’s power by 2050?

Supplies Needed:

· Foam poster board

· White clothes/sheet

· Scissors/knife

· Tape

Solar System Halloween Costume

You can never go wrong bringing back old school science with our solar system! Here’s how to create your own little wearable solar system costume:

1. Lay the skirt on the floor so you see it’s full circle

2. Place each planet so you know where you want it. (We did 4 on each side and left the sun out).

3. Hand sew each planet on. For quicker application, use hot glue. (You just want to make sure it’s securely adhered).

4. Add the moons and shooting stars by sewing or using hot glue.

5. Cut out the points of the sun with the yellow craft foam. (We did 5 points making 3 different sized triangles).

6. Add the stars to the skirt using a hot glue gun

7. Add the sun’s points to headband using the hot glue gun

8. Dress up and watch yourself evolve into the solar system!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Black Circle Skirt

· Yellow Shirt

· Black sparkle leggings

· Solar Sytem Kit (this one is at ToysRUs & came with everything or you can find it on Amazon)

· Black Thread & Needle (Optional)

· Yellow craft foam

· Headband

· Hot Glue Gun

Robot Costume

Robot costumes are always a cool build not only on Halloween but to any costume party. To make this epic costume, spray a cardboard box silver, make sure cut out holes for your arms and head section. You can opt for a full faced helmet or an open face one, because no one will judge an awesome looking robot!

Bottle caps and other electronic look alike parts make for the perfect additions to this costume. Simply spray paint them silver and hot glue them on the front of the box. As an added look of a rocket launcher, spray paint water bottles and adhere them to the back of the box.

The boots can be tricky but complete the outfit. Simple wrap your desired shoes in tin foil/aluminum foil and ensure they are adhered to prevent falling off while walking.

Supplies Needed:

· 1 large box for the body

· 1 smaller box for the head

· Flexible Ducts

· A slinky

· Bottle caps

· 2 x spray can lids

· 2 x soft drink bottles

· Robot Gauges

· Silver spray paint

· Aluminum foil/tin foil

· Masking tape

· Silver face paint (optional)

· Glue gun

· Box cutter/Stanley Knife

Rain Cloud Costume

This whole costume is pretty cheap! You may have most of the craft supplies on hand, but even if you don’t, you can make this rain cloud costume for under $15. And if you are the type to wait till last minute, this whole costume came together in under 2 hours!

This costume has a fun big, fluffy grey cloud that you wear on your head and felt rain drops that shower down from the cloud. Pair it with some dark colored clothing and rain boots for a fun last-minute costume idea!

Supplies Needed:

· One cheap party store hat with a wide brim.

· Polyester batting

· Spray adhesive glue

· A hot glue gun

· Grey spray paint

· Blue yarn and a sheet of blue felt

Start by spray painting the hat just in case any of the hat showed through the cloud. Next, spray the hat with spray adhesive and add the polyester batting in small clumps. Keep on spraying and adding batting until you get the cloud shape you want. Then spray the batting a bit with the grey spray paint to give it a storm cloud look. Fold your felt so you are cutting 2 layers at the same time, and cut your rain drop shapes from the felt. You want to cut 2 layers at a time, so you end up with 2 identical rain drops with each cut. Cut several pieces of yarn in varying lengths; We used 14 pieces ranging from about 6″to about 25”. Using your hot glue gun, glue the drops to the end of the yarn, sandwiching the yarn between the drops. (You can also add a second rain drop to some of the strings about halfway up). Glue the top of the yarn to the brim of the hat with your hot glue. And your rain cloud hat is done! Put it on with some grey or black clothes, or maybe a raincoat, and some rain boots and you are ready for trick or treating!

Happy Costume Making!
